I have mine mounted on the top of the dash to the right of the wheel - nearly in the center of the car - and pretty much have to string the antenna right up the center of the windscreen. However, the cable connecting the receiver to the GO 720 is WAY too short unless you're mounting the unit on the windscreen or on the dash right next to the windscreen edge.

However, the combined cost of the GO 720 and the receiver was within the same ballpark as the nearest competitor feature-wise, which I think of as the Garmin Nuvi 660 which also features hands-free bluetooth calling (with more supported phones) and a traffic receiver. However, the coverage is not universal, though it is in many major metro areas - so for some this may not be worth it. It's wierd just looking at the map and seeing all the delays and blocks, etc popping up and being able to click on them there. However, it is amazing to get the traffic information right there right away. The RDS-TMC fm receiver works well, but it is finicky regarding position - make sure if you get this accessory, you mount it vertically on the windscreen (along the edge is best) if you can. I didn't go out of my way for this feature, but I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works. Think of it as a GPS map version of Wikipedia - you can limit this to "trusted" or verified updates and Tomtom corrections if you like, and send out any corrections you have as well.

This allows you and other Tomtom GO users to share their map "corrections" - like road closures and map updates - without having to buy a new total map update every year or so.

The GO 720 has a feature built into it called "mapshare" - to my knowledge, Tomtom is the only manufacturer who has something like this and only on the 720 and maybe some of the other newer GO units. Hopefully, Tomtom will take this to heart and work to expand their compatability. If you are not technically inclined, you may want to avoid the unit unless Tomtom says your phone is specifically supported - which does eliminate a large number of phone/network combinations unfortunately. With some work, I was able to work out a process that allowed the phone to be paired to the Tomtom - once that was done, the units recognized and connected to each other after that without a hitch and hands-free calling works loud and clear - though there have been complaints of quality problems on earlier batches of units. When I first tried to pair my phone (a Samsung M300 sprint cell phone) the system would not work - the Tomtom would see the phone but would not connect properly. BTW - the they do have a cable that lets you tie the iPod into the tomtom and control it, but apparently it isn't worth bothering from what I've read. The unit does have a photo viewer and MP3 player and they seem to work fine, but won't replace my iPod. I haven't used the FM transmitter, but my experience with those is shaky so I don't expect I'll be disappointed.

After checking, I knew they did not support any of the Tomtom plus services through Sprint networks - though there are ways to work around this if you search the net - but didn't feel that would impact the hands-free calling.įirst, I must say the GO 720 is very impressive - it is easy to use and understand with a large clear screen and a loud and clear speaker - when using one of the "computer" voices, the Tomtom is capable of saying street names and route names, though sometimes it mangles pronunciation amusingly.

I previously owned a Tomtom ONE unit and decided to upgrade to the GO 720 - mainly to take advantage of the RDS-TMC FM traffic receiver and the Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling in the car while on the road.
